The Bay Area's Filipino Food Movement Sparks a National Conversation

"Aug. 30, 2014, at around noon, was the moment Joanne Boston realized that the Filipino Food Movement, the organization she helped found, had grabbed the public’s attention. It was the moment the organization’s first big event threatened to spiral out of control.

​Boston and the other organizers of Savor Filipino, the country’s first Filipino food festival, had anticipated — hoped for — 14,000 attendees to come to Justin Herman Plaza in downtown San Francisco.

The highly anticipated encore to one of the top food events in San Francisco in 2014, Savor Filipino is gearing up to come back in 2016 with a follow up event. Please stay tuned on our Facebook page!

We are assembling a group of extraordinary foodies.

It really takes a village to put together a large-scale food event. We are calling out to all foodies & poodforn stars to come forward and help us out! We need volunteers at every stage  from planning all the way to helping with setup, break down, cooking, serving, at our educational exhibits, and everything in between.

Pistahan Culinary Pavilion

Its that time again! Pistahan, the San Francisco Bay Areas largest Filipino Cultural Celebration, is took over Yerba Buena Gardens! And the Filipino Food Movement is took over the Culinary Pavilion! Thanks to the help of the Filipino American Arts Exposition, we brought a first ever media panel discussion, several educational chef demos, and the ever popular cookoff and eating contests!

Special thanks to our sponsors to making the event a success, and a huge thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers that work tirelessly behind the scenes.

Pistahan is a labor of love, and we love what we do, and we are grateful that you all love what we do too!

Saturday August 8, 2015

12:00n: Warm Up with Darling's Fanatics Dance Group. Darling also happens to own one of our favorite Filipino bakeries in the Bay!

1:00p: XRoads Sea Salt feat. Chef Lennie DiCarlo. Her palate for fine finishing salts has brought Philippine Sea Salts to the best kitchens in the world, including French Laundry in Napa.

1:30p: Cocktail Showcase feat. Sun Tropics & Infanta Lambanog. Sun Topic's wonderful natural tropical juices and Infanta's smooth liquor is a match made in cocktail heaven!

2:00p: "Filipino Food in the Media" Panel feat. Bay Area Writers & Producers Keesa Ocampo, Emma Krasov, Lee Salazar, Chef Lennie DiCarlo, and Dr. Dawn Mabalon, PhD.

3:00p: Sinigang Cookoff feat. local contestants in a battle for the best Sinigang. No flavoring pouches allowed! Judges include FFM's Joanne Boston & Chef Charleen Caabay of Kainbigan Restaurant. Samples will be served while supplies last.

4:00p: Magnolia Purple Freeze Challenge ice cream eating contest. The fastest spoons on the west coast will race to see who finishes a whole tub of Ube (Purple Yam) Ice Cream! Prizes provided by Ramar Foods, makers of Magnolia Ice Cream and long-time supporters of the Filipino Food Movement. Sign up at the Culinary Pavilion by 3:45p to enter!

12:00n: Spotlight on The Lumpia Company feat. Lumpia Brothers Alex Retodo, Jeff Martinez, & Eric Pascual. This ain't your mama's Lumpia! Hot samples will be served while supplies last.

1:00p: Culinary Travel Destinations of the Philippines A program by the Philippines Department of Tourism, Mango Tours, and Barkadahan, a consortium of food makers from around the Philippines.

2:00p: Spotlight on Hapag Pilipino Restaurant in Daly City with Chef Willie Carandang. Explore 3 great dishes such as Bibinka (coconut rice cake), Adobong Gata (vinegar braise with coconut milk), and Chicken Inasal (Filipino-style grilled chicken). Samples will be served while supplies last.

3:00p: Heavenly Ice Cream Tasting Bee Local ice cream maker Heavenly's contest puts your tongue and your brain to work. Sign up at the culinary pavilion by 2:45p Sunday.

3:30p: Spotlight on Pamapalasa Restaurant in SOMA feat. Chef Jerrick Figueroa, who will be preparing Bilo-Bilo (sticky rice in a coconut porridge) with a fusion twist! And yes, samples will be served while supplies last!

4:15p: Island Pacific Balut Eating Contest  You've either heard of it or you love it, Balut is a delicacy that is too often misunderstood. Come stuff your face for bragging rights for this high-energy eating contest!  Sign up at the Culinary Pavilion by 4pm Sunday to enter!

Savor Filipino makeS Appearance at Union Square SF 6/27/15

We are at it again! The center of Union Square in San Francisco will be transformed into a cultural celebration for Kalayaan: Philippine Independence Day. The Filipno Food Movement will be present with a "mini-Savor-Filipino" booth featuring several excellent local chefs during the day! Come join the fun for all-day entertainment, great weather, and of course, some excellent Filipino Food!

We are serving food from noon-8p, come back every 2 hours to try specialties from each of our featured chefs!

A successful Fundraiser for The Apl.de.ap Foundation Int'l

On May 30th, two of our lovely Chefs Jessette Kalsi (Nouveau Filipino, Napa) and Charleen Caabay (Kainbigan, Oakland) were joined by Apl.de.ap for a fundraiser at a private residence in Oakland. Proceeds went to benefit the Apl.de.ap Foundation International and the Filipno Food Movement.

Special thanks to the generous Dr. Rollington Ferguson, MD for opening his wonderful home to us all so we can do some good!
